Thorndike Development has opened community gardens at Larkwood, its new neighborhood of townhomes along the Taunton River in Raynham, giving the first homeowners there a shared place to grow vegetables and flowers. The gardens carry on a tradition the company started at GreatBrook in Norton, MA in 2002, on the idea that neighbors who garden side by side get to know each other.

That tradition began on a Saturday in June 2002, when about 25 homeowners and friends came out for the opening of the GreatBrook community gardens. Before the afternoon was over, two of the new gardeners found out they had worked at the same engineering company for more than ten years. They had passed each other in the halls and never met. They went home friends.
“That day at GreatBrook is why we keep building them,” said Ben Geisinger, Associate Partner and Director of Sales and Marketing at Thorndike Development. “You can live down the street from someone for years and never really talk. Give two people a garden and a few weeks of the same weeds and the same tomatoes, and that changes. People come out to grow vegetables and flowers, and they end up growing friendships.”
Thorndike has built community gardens into its neighborhoods ever since. At Red Mill Village, another of its neighborhoods in Norton, the homeowners made the gardens their own, holding an opening day each spring and naming fall winners for the best tomato and the largest pumpkin.
The Larkwood gardens opened on September 15, 2026, with a ribbon cutting for the people who live there. The company put them in early, so the first homeowners can use them now. The gardens have 57 raised beds, open to every household. The gardens and the central green are finished. Still to come, there will be walking trails along the river, a canoe and kayak launch, a playground and a half-court basketball court. Massasoit State Park is nearby.
Larkwood offers single-family attached townhomes with single-level and multi-level floor plans and garage parking for every home. The neighborhood is in the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District, and Routes 24 and I-495 are less than ten minutes away.
“Spring will be the first full growing season at Larkwood, and that’s when you’ll see it,” said Michael Devin, Vice President and Director of Community Relations at Thorndike Development. “Somebody brings extra zucchini to the bed next door, somebody shows up with a hose, and by August people know each other’s names. We’ve seen it in our other neighborhoods, and we’re looking forward to seeing it here.”
