An analysis of more than 6,000 custom sofa orders finds warm colors peak in November, two months after fall home decor searches peak in September.

The fall campaign is over by the time the fall orders arrive. Brands reach people while they’re browsing in September, then go quiet on the ones deciding in November.”

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, UNITED STATES, October 21, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Fall decor reaches stores long before it reaches living rooms. New data from custom furniture maker DreamSofa shows that shoppers take roughly two months longer to act on it than search interest suggests.

DreamSofa analyzed more than 6,000 custom sofa orders placed between August 2023 and December 2025, covering color and product-type choices, alongside Google Trends search data. The study found a consistent seasonal shift in what people buy, and a consistent lag between when fall is searched for and when it is actually purchased.

Warm colors nearly double

Across summer 2025, warm shades such as rust, terracotta, camel, chocolate, amber and mustard accounted for just over 7% of sofa pieces ordered. By fall, that share had risen to almost 13%, a 78% relative increase in a single season. Roughly one in fourteen summer buyers chose a warm tone; by fall it was closer to one in eight.

The pattern is not a one-year result. Across both full years measured, warm-tone share rose an average of 49% between summer and fall.

The buying peak arrives two months after the search peak

Month by month, warm tones bottom out in July at 7.7% of orders and rise through the fall: 8.6% in August, 11.3% in September, reaching their high of 13.4% in November.

Google Trends data for “fall home decor” peaks in September, two months before orders do. The study notes these are two separate seasonal patterns rather than evidence that the same shoppers moved from searching to buying.

Cozier does not mean bigger

DreamSofa expected larger seating to rise alongside warmer colors. It did not. Sectionals took a smaller share of orders in fall in both full years measured: down 0.6 percentage points in 2024, from 21.9% to 21.3%, and down 2.4 points in 2025, from 23.5% to 21.0%, an average decline of 1.5 points.

What changes heading into fall is color rather than size. The study notes that this measures the share of pieces classified as sectionals, not the physical dimensions or seat count of the furniture ordered.

Warm shades never dominate. Cool grays and blues lead the order mix in every month of the year, including at the November peak.

About the data

The study is based on DreamSofa order data from the United States, covering August 2023 to December 2025 and ending with the most recent complete fall season. Summer is defined as June through August and fall as September through November. Figures describe pieces ordered and are reported as shares rather than counts. The 2023 period is excluded from seasonal comparisons because the data window opens in mid-August.

DreamSofa notes that the findings describe its own customers, people commissioning made-to-order furniture, rather than a representative sample of US furniture buyers. The sample is approximately 2,130 pieces per year. The 78% and 49% figures are relative changes in warm-toned share, not growth in the number of sofas sold.

Search interest is reported on Google Trends’ relative 0 to 100 index, which measures sampled interest rather than search counts.
